At the Harvest Festival this year in downtown Port Clinton, Magruder Hospital employees hosted a pancake breakfast and are donating all of the funds they raised toward the hospital's oncology renovation.

In the past we have donated to the American Cancer Society, but decided we wanted the money to stay right here in the community. None of us could think of a better benefactor than Magruder. We are designating the funds to go toward the hospital's oncology clinic renovation which is scheduled to start soon," says Jody Bacak who is a nurse at Magruder. She and her husband Don, and fellow employee Chris Campbell, were the main organizers.

The star pancake flipper this year was Dr. Sandy McLean, a Magruder Family Physician.

"He even made Mickey Mouse pancakes for the kids," laughs Bacak. "He flipped a lot of pancakes that morning."

Over the years, Dr. Steven Jackson, a Magruder Family Physician, has volunteered his time to flip the pancakes. He could not make the event this year, so Bacak says Dr. McLean stepped right up.

"Dr. Jackson has been our go to guy for the event. When he couldn't do it we were thankful Dr. McLean agreed to help us out. They are both great at it and the crowd loves getting their pancakes from the doctors."

This year the group made over $1,000.

In addition to the pancake breakfast, they also held a 50/50 raffle where Dan Almendinger, a member of Magruder's Board of Trustees, drew the winner.

"Dr. Dan Cadigan, a Magruder Family Physician, won the drawing. He donated it all back to the hospital. We were really grateful for the extra proceeds," says Bacak.

In addition to the support of hospital physicians and board members, Bacak said the support of hospital employees is what has made it happen every year.

"It is great to have everyone come together. The same dedicated group of people help every year and it's always a lot of fun for a great cause."

Other Magruder employees and family involved this year included: Denise, Scott, & Jeff Ash, Ben Bacak, Kris Baranek, Katie Bacak, Joel Riedy, Shelley Hillman, Chris Campbell, Sue Huskey, Sue & Dave Blankenbeker, and Holly & Debbie Garrard.
