The hospitals featured on the list have fewer than 550 beds and minimal teaching programs. Some are suburban hospitals, but many are located in rural areas and are their communities' sole hospital. Becker's Hospital Review has published a version of this every year since 2011, and this is the fourth time the list has included 100 hospitals. In 2015, Magruder Hospital was added to this list. The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on various rankings and awards, including those from iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades and CareChex.
iVantage Health Analytics announced in 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the U.S. and Magruder Hospital is pleased to be included. iVantage Health Analytics used its Hospital Strength Index to rank rural, safety-net hospitals based on market conditions, clinical and operational performance and financial and qualitative outcomes. The characteristics of the 100 top critical access hospitals are described in a study by iVantage Health Analytics, "Benchmark Performance for Critical Access Hospitals."
Magruder was named with this recognition in 2014, 2015 and 2016. There are 1,332 critical access hospitals throughout the United States and Becker's Hospital Review highlights Magurder Hospital in the subset of 50 critical access hospitals to know. Critical access hospitals are fairly unique as acute care hospitals go. They must have no more than 25 inpatient beds, have an annual average length of stay of no more than 96 hours for acute care, offer 24/7 emergency care. The data compiled for this recognition comes from the National Rurual Health Assocation list of Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals, CMS Hopsital Compare, iVantage and various Healthgrades awards.
Each year the Excellence in Patient Care awards are presented to organizations working in partnership with Studer Group to achieve measurable results. Awards are given based on a variety categories, such as improved HCAHPS and Core Measures, increased employee engagement, reduced turnover and more. To be eligible for an award, an organization must demonstrate outstanding performance in patient care.

The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation's predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
Hospitals & Health Networks sponsors the annual Most Wired Survey, which is an industry-standard benchmark study. The survey is designed to measure the level of IT adoption in U.S. hospitals and health systems, and is useful tool for hospital and health system leadership to map their IT strategic plans. Health Forum, an American Hospital Association information company, distributes, collects and analyzes the Most Wired data and develops benchmarks that are becoming the industry standard for measuring IT adoption for operational, financial and clinical performance in health care delivery systems.
