The hospitals featured on the list have fewer than 550 beds and minimal teaching programs. Some are suburban hospitals, but many are located in rural areas and are their communities' sole hospital. Becker's Hospital Review has published a version of this every year since 2011, and this is the fourth time the list has included 100 hospitals. In 2015, Magruder Hospital was added to this list. The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on various rankings and awards, including those from iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades and CareChex.
iVantage Health Analytics announced in 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the U.S. and Magruder Hospital is pleased to be included. iVantage Health Analytics used its Hospital Strength Index to rank rural, safety-net hospitals based on market conditions, clinical and operational performance and financial and qualitative outcomes. The characteristics of the 100 top critical access hospitals are described in a study by iVantage Health Analytics, "Benchmark Performance for Critical Access Hospitals."
