Family Wellness
May is Family Wellness Month, and the health and well-being of our families can mean a lot of different things. Depending on who you ask, there are around 8 dimensions of health: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, Vocational, Financial and Environmental. That can seem like a lot of things to manage, but every single area doesn’t need to be tackled all at once. Pick and choose a couple things, and just take one step in the right direction.
Taking just a small step in one of the many dimensions of health can have a positive impact on the health of our families. Come up with your own ideas for each dimension, toss them in a jar and pick one out each week, or whatever is manageable for you.
It can be things like:
Cut up vegetables to have on hand.
Start a relaxing routine before bed.
Have a family dance party to get some physical activity.
Grow a couple of plants or small garden. It could be flowers or vegetables or herbs.
Volunteer as a family somewhere.
Find a new recipe to try.
Encourage everyone to contribute to a family piggy bank and then go do something fun with that money.
Play cards or board games or charades.
Take a break from technology for an afternoon.
Pick up litter in the neighborhood.
Go to the local library and pick out a book on a topic that’s new to you.
Visit a friend, family member or neighbor.
You can rotate these and lots of other ideas to stretch this celebration of Family Wellness all year long!
