Healthy Skin

Lotion on SkinNo matter the season, taking care of our skin should be somewhere on our daily to-do list.  Whether it’s hot and sunny, gray and windy, or somewhere in between, there are some simple things we can do to manage how the world around us affects our skin.  Michelle Bodie, PA-C, from Dermatology Partners gives us four recommendations to help keep our skin healthy.

  • For sure in the summer, and even in the winter, you still need daily sun block.  UVB rays are stronger in the summer, but can still damage skin, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces. UVA rays are constant throughout the year and can penetrate through cloudy weather.
  • Use a humidifier in your home and/or office.  When your skin is dry, it can have small cracks which can allow moisture to escape.  A humidifier helps put moisture back in the air and can help hydrate your skin.
  • Take fewer showers and use warm or even cool water instead of hot.  If you need to shower daily, consider taking shorter showers.  Be sure you moisturize afterward.
  • Use a basic fragrance-free moisturizing cream at least twice a day.  Lotions are usually lighter and contain more water, while creams are thicker and have less water and more oil content.
