Physical Fitness Without a Gym or Class

Maintaining an active lifestyle is vital for our overall well-being, but it doesn’t necessarily require a gym membership or attending fitness classes.  There are countless ways to get your blood pumping and muscles working right from the comfort of your own home or the great outdoors.

At home

There are a wide range of bodyweight exercises that require no special equipment.  Push-ups, squats, lunges, planks and burpees are just a few exercises that can target different muscle groups and boost your cardiovascular fitness.

Check out yoga and Pilates through apps and online tutorials.  These are good for flexibility, balance and core strength, as well as mindfulness and relaxation.

There are some higher intensity exercises like jumping jacks, high knees, jumping rope or dancing.  These increase your heart rate and help burn calories.

Outside

Go for a walk or jog and explore your surroundings. Check out your own neighborhood or local parks while getting fresh air and vitamin D.

If you have a bike, take a ride around your community and enjoy nature.  Biking is low impact and helps strengthen your lower body.

Find some nearby hiking trails and nature preserves.  These are good for physical fitness as well as for mental health and all the benefits of being in nature.

Chores? Yep, chores.

If you have a few flowers or a garden of any kind, get out and turn that weeding, watering and harvesting into a fitness opportunity.

You might be surprised at how much physical activity is involved in cleaning and organizing the house.  You can accomplish two things at once!

If you have some errands to run nearby, consider walking or riding a bike.

Online options

There are a variety of YouTube workouts and fitness apps available for all types of fitness levels and interests.  There are so many that it can be overwhelming, so read reviews and ask friends and family for recommendations.

Whatever you decide to start doing, listen to your body and work your way up.  If you have health issues, check with your primary care provider to see if you need clearance.  Getting up and taking that first step can be the hardest part, so take a deep breath, and get moving.
