Tips on how to get the most out of your next doctor’s appointment
If you’re headed to meet with your doctor, specialist or other provider it’s important you come prepared—ready with all the questions you may have and bringing the things you need to your appointment. This list of tips can help you get in and out of your next doctor’s appointment with ease, and help your providers have access to everything they need to give you the best care experience.
- When you call to schedule an appointment be sure to explain to the scheduler what you need to be seen for so the appropriate amount of time can be allocated for your appointment.
- Although your primary care provider would like to talk with you at length, each patient is given a limited amount of time. Be sure to make the best of your time and come prepared with your questions/concerns.
- If you have an acute issue be sure to provide a brief description of your symptoms; when it started, how often it happens and if it is getting worse or better.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete any necessary paperwork or demographic updates.
- If you have multiple issues you may need to schedule multiple appointments to ensure enough time to address each issue. It’s also important to note that some insurance plans have strict appointment guidelines. For example, if you schedule an appointment for an annual or wellness visit and you have other concerns, your insurance may not reimburse for that visit.
- Bring a list of all the medications you are currently taking.
- Bring your insurance card and driver’s license to each appointment so the scheduling staff can make sure your information in the system is correct.
- If you choose to bring a family member or companion to the appointment remember to keep the conversation focused on the patient.
- Ask for an After Visit Summary when you check-out so you have a printed summary of your visit.
- Make your next appointment before you leave the doctor’s office and request a reminder call, email or text.
- If you are unable to make your scheduled appointment, please call and reschedule your appointment as far in advance as possible so that appointment time can be opened up for other patients.
- Stay connected and sign up for the Patient Portal so you have access to your medical history, immunizations, prescribed medication list, after visit summaries, results and your personal health history.
